Even if we are surrounded by high technology and given easy access to information, there are still misconceptions about diabetes. The concepts range from believable to really outrageous.
Diabetes is a Transmittable Disease: Unlike certain illnesses that may be transmitted from spread of infection, diabetes is acquired and may develop from the person's inability to generate insulin.
Insulin Injection is Necessary in all diabetic patients: Insulin shots are only required to patients suffering from Type 1 Diabetes. The reason for this is that the body cannot generate its own insulin anymore. For patients suffering from Type 2 Diabetes are required to take medication and practice regular exercise. However, if all these methods fail, these patients are then required to have insulin shots.
No Other Parts of The Body is affected by Diabetes except blood: Diabetes treatments are necessary otherwise all parts of the body may suffer from the complications diabetes may bring. The common complications of diabetes are heart-related ailments, kidney and nerve damages and many more. Blood diseases are just some of the complications this disease may bring.
Eating too much sweet foods may contribute to the development of diabetes: Sweet foods do not cause diabetes; it may only aggravate the condition most especially to those who have been diagnosed with one.
Hypertension and Atherosclerosis are caused by Insulin: Insulin may only aggravate hypertension and atherosclerosis condition but these two diseases are caused by other factors and not by insulin.
Fruit is Healthy and can be Eaten in any Quantity: Fruits contain fiber, vitamins, and minerals which are healthy for a person. Fruit also contains carbohydrates which convert almost instantly into sugar, so fruit should be eaten in moderation.
Pasta, Potatoes and Bread; big no for diabetics: Carbohydrate-rich foods such as pasta, potatoes and breads are not good for patients suffering from diabetes. In the contrary to this, these types of foods contain some special types of carbohydrates that are needed by diabetic patients. However, not because
Chocolates; big no for diabetics: Because chocolates are sweets, it is also believed that these are bad for diabetic patients. In contrary to this, it is okay for diabetic patients to eat chocolates as long as these are eaten moderately.
Diabetic Diet should be followed strictly: As long as diabetic patients eat and follow healthy diet such as meals low in sugar, low in fats and low in sodium, it is okay not to eat special diabetic foods. In addition to that, exercise must be done regularly.
Insulin Can Make a Person Gain Weight: While it is true that insulin adds weight to a person, it may be reversed as long as healthy diet is followed.
Adults are the only ones affected by Diabetes: Any person with a sedentary lifestyle may be prone to Type 2 Diabetes. These are the people with less mobility. Even children who do not move their body often may have Type 2 Diabetes. Nowadays, there are many things such as video games and computers and these things decrease the time spent for moving and exercises. Moreover, the availability of unhealthy foods in the market is rapidly increasing. Because parents are too busy to prepare healthy foods, children tend to eat junk foods and unhealthy foods such as those offered in the fast foods and other restaurants. Thus, Type 2 Diabetes may develop even in children.
Other Diseases are more likely to develop on Diabetic Patients: Diabetic patients are required to get anti-infection shots because infections may cause high blood sugar level and this condition is not good for diabetic patients.
There are many types of myths and wrong beliefs about diabetes. The above are just some of them. Others may sound very funny and silly and some are really severe and serious however, with proper knowledge and awareness, these myths and these beliefs will all be history.
